Thriving Community + Endless Family Fun

Katy was officially incorporated in 1945. Known as a railroad town, the earliest settlers came in 1872. It was open prairie, home to wildlife and Indian tribes. The main industry became rice, peanuts and cotton farming. A gas field was discovered in 1934 then it really started to prosper and grow. This still is an important part of the city today. It is a thriving, family style community with small town charm with the amenities but without the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Carpool for free

Carpool for free using the HOV lane: HOV Lanes are restricted lanes reserved for vehicles with a driver and one or more passengers. Each vehicle that travels on an HOV Lane must carry at least two or, in some cases, three people. HOV Lanes allow drivers to travel faster and avoid congestion in regular lanes during peak periods. Motorcycles are permitted to travel on the HOV Lane at any time as per federal guidelines.

Pay for the fast lane

Pay for the fast lane (aka EZ tag): For those who are unable to carpool and use the HOV lane, there is also another option to access the fast lane using the EZ tag. First and foremost, an EZ TAG account is not required, it is highly recommended for greater access and convenience. Qualifying vehicles may use the all-electronic (EZ TAG Only) toll lanes and will automatically receive the discounted tolling rate.

How does the EZ tag work?

An EZ TAG is a small adhesive device that adheres to the inside of the windshield. As EZ TAG customers use the system, tolls are electronically deducted from their account. When the EZ TAG account reaches the minimum balance level, it automatically charges (debits) the customer’s credit card or bank account to bring it back to the original deposit amount.

Living in Katy

Katy, first known as "Cane Island" in the late 1800s, is a community with a rich history that has grown into the charming suburb it is today!

The city's farming and oil roots can still be seen today with the vast options of outdoor activities and the economy being influenced by the oil industry.

As far as the economy and the job market goes large companies, like Igloo and Academy Sports & Outdoors, are headquartered in Katy. It is also a short drive to Houston's Energy Corridor where many find themselves employed.

Katy is large enough to have all of the shopping, dining, and activities you may need, but small enough to still know the people in your community! Take into account Katy Asian Town that has become a hub for multicultural dining and shopping. Katy has been ranked one of the best suburbs in Houston to buy a house and has one of the best school districts in Texas!

The Katy Rice Harvest Festival makes an appearance once a year bringing live music, booths, a carnival, food, and more to the city!

The Houston area has seen vast growth in recent years with the Katy Freeway expanding to 26 to 30 lanes in 2008. Katy is home to many masterplanned communities like Seven Meadows, Camillo Lakes, Cane Island, Cinco Ranch, along with MANY more! Katy has been recognized as an area for economic excellence, workforce excellence, and the #1 high growth area in the US as of 2010.

How we maintain and grow as a community

  • What are MUD Taxes

MUD stands for Municipal Utility District, which is a subdivision of the State of Texas that is created to build infrastructure and provide services such as water, sewer, and stormwater drainage in areas where a city cannot provide them. A MUD might be created for a brand new community that sits just outside Houston's public water services, for example. Municipal Utility Districts are funded through bonds. Homeowners then pay off those bonds through MUD tax. As the debt decreases, MUD taxes may also decrease over time.

  • What do MUDs provide to a community?

In addition to their common functions of water and wastewater service, MUDs are legally empowered to engage in conservation, irrigation, electrical generation, firefighting, solid waste collection and disposal, and recreational activities (such as parks, swimming pools, and sports courts). A MUD can provide for itself the recreational amenities that are approved by the Board of Directors and funded by the District.

  • Will my taxes be higher in a MUD?

MUD tax rates, like all property tax rates, vary according to property values and debt requirements. MUD rates generally decline over time as the MUD is built out and operating and debt service costs are shared by more homeowners.
